While January may be a quiet month for most plants who are dormant, it is a great time for windfall Usnea! Usnea in the Winter has a greater concentration of Usnic acid which gives it antimicrobial properties that are great for respiratory infections, skin infections and fungal infections.

The best way to use it is in the form of a tincture and here I am making a basic tincture 1:3 using food grade ethanol.

Usnea is only for short term acute use, no more than 2 weeks internally at around 10-30 drops in water.

Dilute 1 to 3 if using externally

I love going to my usual foraging haunts BUT spontaneously finding a Coltsfoot motherload of seeds, flowers and leaves in one place while on a dog walk between showers has just made my day (yes I’m easily pleased 🤪)

It makes a great steam or syrup for coughs and asthma, though it can only be used for a few days at a time (due to PA’s).

It’s a plant in decline in the UK too unfortunately so seeing this amount of seeds was very heartening and some may be making their way to my garden to establish a new colony 😃

It’s a plant in decline in the UK too unfortunately so seeing this amount of seeds was very heartening and some may be making their way to my garden to establish a new colony 😃

As usual, I hibernate from the Solstice until the end of January, but I am emerging a couple of days early because I may just burst with excitement otherwise!!!!

This has been a real labour of love over the last 5 years and contains all of my research on the historical use of over 100 wild plants as well as the modern research carried out, dosages, uses, precautions and recipes old and new for each plant.

This amazing lichen was being developed as an antibiotic in the 20th Century, but its slow growing nature meant that when penicillin was discovered, it fell by the wayside!

It is nevertheless antimicrobial and antifungal and a wonderful wound healer!

I harvested some of my beautiful garden Betony yesterday. I love this plant as a general substitute for black tea, with Raspberry leaf and just a smidge of Agrimony.

An old Italian proverb, ‘ Sell your coat and buy Betony’, said at a time when coats were an incredibly valuable piece pf property, shows what value was placed on Betony’s medicinal properties.

Wood betony was considered a general panacea in the Renaissance period and; “you should have as many virtues as Betony” was another saying of the time

I’m not sure there is a herb that has been held in higher repute than Betony and yet in modern herbal medicine, you do not see it used that often. Betony fell out of favour because it can take a long time of continuous use to see results. It helps the body to heal itself cumulatively, and this cumulative effect is referred to by Hoffman in 2003 who said “Its underlying action appears to be through toning and strengthening the nervous system while simultaneously soothing nervous tension”.

Getting ready for the first of this year’s herbal stalls in August, with my Chickweed and Nettle roll-on for insect bites! The tiny Chickweed plant is so easily overlooked but is a premier antipruritic while nettle is an antihistamine.
